🌱 Our Summer Philosophy

Denver is already ahead of the curve. This summer is not about pushing further ahead — it's about deepening what she knows, building new joys, and arriving in kindergarten confident and curious. Reading should feel like an adventure, not a chore. Keep it light. Follow her energy. If she resists, stop and try again another day. A happy learner is the best learner.

🍦 How This Plan Works — Read Me First

This is a menu, not a schedule. Each week gives you more options than you'll use — enough to cover 5 sessions with choices left over. You don't do all of them, and not in any fixed order. Each day, pick based on Denver's energy and your plans. Here's the daily rhythm:

Blending Warm-Up (~5 min, most days)The one daily constant. Quick, playful sound-blending before anything else. Skip it on city days.

Pick 1–2 Blocks from the Week's Menu (~20–30 min each)Busy day? Do just one — make it the priority (⭐). Relaxed day? Do two, split with a break between. Never more than two.

Reading for Joy (anytime — bedtime counts!)Read together as long as she's into it. Stop when she's done, even mid-chapter. Some days a chapter book, some days a picture book or a reread. Reading.com a few nights a week if she wants.

Aim for ~5 sessions a weekAny 5 days. Traveling Monday? Pick it up Saturday. Miss a day? No guilt.
You won't use every optionEach week has extra on purpose. Leftovers aren't "missed" — they're choices you didn't need.
Repetition is goodDoing the same kind of journal entry 3 times isn't boring — it's how the skill sticks.
Follow her lead on readingEngaged? Keep going. Restless? Stop. Pace is hers, not the plan's.

Week 1
🚀 Launch Week — Let's Discover!
June 1 – June 5
This week's big idea: Ease in. Set up the Summer Journal, fall in love with a new chapter book, and make blending a fun daily habit. Low pressure — just building the rhythm.

Literacy Menu

pick as energy allows
  • ⭐ Start a chapter book. Look at the cover together first: "What do you think happens?" Then read as long as she's engaged — could be 2 pages or 2 chapters. Stop when she's done.
  • Feelings check. After reading: "How did that part make you feel? Was anyone happy, scared, silly?" Builds the idea that books make us feel things.
  • Act it out. Pick a fun scene and act it out together with silly voices.
  • Predict & check. Before the next reading: "What do you think happens next?" After: "Were you right?"
  • Retell. "Tell me the story so far in your own words." Builds comprehension and sequencing.
  • Sight-word hunt. Pick 3 sight words she knows; spot them on a page as you read.

Writing Menu

repeat freely — repetition helps
  • ⭐ Start the Summer Journal. Get a blank notebook. First entry: draw something she loves. Writing optional day one — just the drawing is fine.
  • Draw + one sentence. Another day: draw, then write one sentence about it. Don't over-correct spelling — inventive spelling is healthy now.
  • Name practice. Write her full first (and last, if she's ready) name with good spacing.
  • "My favorite" entry. Draw + write about a favorite food, toy, or place.
  • Focus skill: capital at the start, period at the end. Pick just one to gently notice each time.

  • 📺 Numberblocks Season 1 — keep it rolling
  • 🔬 Ask: "What's one thing you wonder about the world?" Write it in the journal — we'll answer some this summer.
🏙️ City Day: Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Afterward ask: "What surprised you most?" That's the day's learning — done.
Week 2
🌿 The Living World — Plants & Animals
June 8 – June 12
This week's big idea: Start a plant that grows all summer, and gently introduce subtraction as "take away" using objects. Keep math hands-on and playful.

Science Menu

  • ⭐ Plant a seed. Beans in a cup or herbs in a pot. Draw it in the journal — you'll redraw it through the summer to track growth.
  • What do plants need? Sun, water, soil, air. Try a "what if we forget to water it?" conversation.
  • Label a plant. Draw and label roots, stem, leaves, flower.
  • Living vs. not living. Walk around the house/yard sorting things: is a rock alive? A dog? A toy? Why?
  • Nature collection. Gather leaves/rocks outside, sort by size, color, or shape (sneaky math too).

Math Menu

keep it within 10 at first
  • ⭐ Subtraction with snacks. "You have 8 grapes, you eat 3 — how many left?" She removes them physically. Connect to addition: "this is the opposite!"
  • Toy story problems. 5 cars in the garage, 2 drive away. Repeat with different numbers — repetition is the point.
  • Draw-and-cross-out. She draws 7 circles, crosses out 4, counts what's left. Bridges objects to paper.
  • Five-frame / ten-frame. Use an egg carton: fill some cups, take some away, count remaining.
  • Stretch (only if easy): take-away within 20 by week's end.

Week 3
🍳 Kitchen Science — Math & Cooking
June 15 – June 19
This week's big idea: Cooking is math and science in disguise — and Denver loves it. A single cooking session can cover both blocks.

Math + Science Menu

pick as energy allows
  • ⭐ Cook something together. Muffins, pizza, smoothies. Math: measuring cups (half a cup), counting, doubling. Science: why does bread rise? What changes when heated?
  • Melt & freeze. Watch ice melt, then refreeze it. Solid → liquid → solid.
  • Double the recipe. "If one batch needs 2 eggs, how many for two batches?" Real doubling.
  • Measuring play. With dry rice or water: which holds more, the cup or the bowl? Pour and compare.
  • Sink or float. Test kitchen items in a bowl of water; predict first, then check.
  • Count & sort. Sort silverware or snacks into groups; count by 2s.

Writing Menu

tie it to the cooking
  • ⭐ "We made this!" Draw the food, write 1–2 sentences. Push gently for a second sentence if the first comes easily.
  • Recipe steps. She writes/dictates the steps in order — great sequencing practice.
  • Rating & review. Draw stars (1–5) and write one sentence: "I liked it because…"
  • Shopping list. Help write the list before you cook — purposeful, real-world writing.

🌌 Blast Off — Space Exploration
June 22 – June 26
This week's big idea: Lean into space (her likely new obsession) and introduce nonfiction reading — a different skill from story books.

Science Menu

pick as energy allows
  • ⭐ Intro the solar system. Earth, Moon, Sun, planets. Use a flashlight + ball to show how the Moon orbits Earth.
  • Draw the solar system. Doesn't need to be to scale — just fun. Name the planets.
  • Moon watch. Go outside at night, find the Moon, talk about what you see. Draw it.
  • Day & night. Spin a globe or ball by a lamp to show why we have day and night.
  • Build a "rocket." Cardboard tube + paper fins; count down and "launch" it.
  • Free explore: NASA Kids Club (nasa.gov/kidsclub).

Literacy Menu

nonfiction is a new skill
  • ⭐ Read a nonfiction space book. Grab one from the library. Point out: it doesn't go in order, it has diagrams, labels, captions.
  • Compare. "How is this different from our chapter book?"
  • Use the table of contents to find the page about her favorite planet.
  • Fact hunt. Find one cool space fact together and tell it to a family member.

Week 5
📖 Story Makers — Write Your Own Book
June 29 – July 3
This week's big idea: The big creative leap — Denver makes her own little book over several days. The book is a project you move through in stages, with lighter options around it.

Make-a-Book Stages

  • ⭐ Brainstorm. Who's the character? What happens? Just talk and jot ideas — no writing pressure.
  • Make the pages. 4–5 pages, one drawing + one sentence each. Scribe while she illustrates if needed. Fold and staple printer paper for a "real book" feel.
  • Cover & author. Decorate the cover, add "by Denver."
  • Read it aloud. She reads her book to you. Big confidence moment — celebrate it.
  • Bonus: make a second tiny book if she's hooked — a sequel!

Math Menu

light, game-based
  • Subtraction War. Flip two cards, subtract smaller from larger, highest answer wins the pile.
  • Tie it in: "Your book has 5 pages, you've drawn 2 — how many left to go?"
  • Roll & subtract. Roll two dice, subtract the smaller from the larger.
  • Free: Math Playground (mathplayground.com) subtraction games.

  • 📺 YouTube read-alouds — search "picture book read aloud" (Mo Willems is a hit)
  • 📺 Odd Squad for math problem-solving
🏙️ City Day: Denver Public Library — get her her own library card and let her pick 3 books herself. That independence is a literacy win.
Week 6
⚡ Weather & Water — Earth Science
July 6 – July 10
This week's big idea: Denver becomes the family meteorologist, and we tackle the number-recognition gap with greater-than / less-than.

Science Menu

  • ⭐ Weather journal. Each morning, look outside and draw the weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy).
  • Rain in a jar. Water + shaving-cream "cloud" + food-coloring drops = watch "rain" fall through.
  • Water cycle talk. Evaporation → clouds → rain → repeat, in simple words.
  • Evaporation test. Put a little water in a dish by the window; mark the level; check it in a few days.
  • Cloud spotting. Lie outside and find shapes; talk about puffy vs. wispy vs. storm clouds.

Math Menu

target the number-ID gap
  • ⭐ Alligator math. The alligator (> <) always eats the bigger number. Write two numbers; she draws the mouth and says which is bigger.
  • Bigger numbers. Use pairs like 67 vs 43 to strengthen recognition of higher numbers.
  • Number-line point. Lay out cards 1–100; call a number and she finds it. If she guesses, "try again" — exactly the skill she's building.
  • Card flip compare. Each flips a card; whoever's is greater wins. Say the comparison out loud.
  • Free: Khan Academy Kids — comparing-numbers activities.

🎨 Art & Engineering — Create & Build
July 13 – July 17
This week's big idea: Hands-on week. Connect shapes/geometry to the art and origami she already loves, and try open-ended building challenges.

Art + Math Menu

  • ⭐ Shape hunt. How many circles in the kitchen? Triangles outside? Name shapes as you find them.
  • Origami. She already knows some — name the shapes each fold makes.
  • Shape collage. Cut shapes from colored paper, arrange into a picture.
  • Pattern art. Make a repeating pattern border (red-blue-red-blue) around a drawing.
  • Symmetry painting. Paint one side of a folded paper, press, open — a mirror image.
  • 2D → 3D. Compare a circle to a ball, a square to a box. Find 3D shapes around the house.

Engineering Menu

celebrate the failures too
  • ⭐ Tower challenge. Tallest tower from 20 index cards, no tape. "Why did it fall? What would you change?"
  • Bridge challenge. Build a bridge between two books that holds a toy.
  • Boat challenge. Make foil "boats"; how many coins before it sinks? Count them.
  • Ramp races. Change the ramp's steepness; does the car go farther? Why?

🐾 Animals & Habitats — Become the Expert
July 20 – July 24
This week's big idea: Denver researches her favorite animal — and, after weeks of blending practice, she tries reading a simple book to you. Keep it pressure-free.

Science + Writing Menu

pick as energy allows
  • ⭐ Favorite-animal research. Find 3 facts (library book or free DKfindout.com). She dictates, you write, she copies one sentence herself.
  • Draw & label. Draw the animal, label body parts.
  • Habitat questions. Where does it live? What does it eat? How does it stay safe?
  • Animal sort. Sort animals: lives in water / land / both. Or: has fur / feathers / scales.
  • Make a mini-poster. One page with the drawing, labels, and her 3 facts — she presents it to the family.

Literacy Menu

gentle, never a test
  • ⭐ She reads to you. A simple Level 1 reader. Don't correct every word — let her try, then gently help. This is where the summer's blending work pays off.
  • Echo reading. You read a line, she reads it back. Lowers the pressure while building fluency.
  • If it frustrates her, back off and read together instead. Confidence matters more than finishing.
  • Animal book pick. Choose a fiction book starring an animal to read together for fun.

This week's big idea: No new content — this is a celebration of growth. Revisit the summer's work and let Denver see how far she's come.

make it a game, not a test
  • ⭐ Read her own book aloud (from Week 5) and flip through the whole Summer Journal together. Point out specific things she's gotten better at.
  • Blending check-in. Notice out loud how much easier it is than Week 1.
  • Math "quiz show." Playful round of subtraction, comparing numbers, shapes — celebrate, don't grade.
  • "This summer I learned…" Final journal page: draw 3 things, a sentence each.
  • Best-of revisit. Redo her single favorite activity from the whole summer.
  • Plant finale. Measure and draw the Week 2 plant one last time — how much did it grow?

  • ⭐ Read together daily — no assignments after. Just enjoy it.
  • Talk about kindergarten. What's she excited about? Any worries? Validate all of it.
  • Visit the school playground if you can, to make it feel familiar.
  • Pick out supplies together — backpack, lunchbox. Ownership builds excitement.
  • Practice the morning routine once or twice — getting dressed, packing the bag — so day one feels easy.
  • One last library trip for books she's excited to read in kindergarten.
